Chorrillos Battlefield find - 1881.

The War of the Pacific (1879-1884) pitted Chile against the allied forces of Peru and Bolivia. The Battle of San Juan and Chorrillos was fought on the 13th January 1881 between the Chilean and Peruvian army with significant losses on both sides and casualties totalling over 15,000. The town of Chorrillos was burnt to the ground following the battle, in an aim to eradicate any remaining Peruvian defenders.

A painted wooden toy soldier with beautifully handwritten label to the front which reads ‘Picked up by F.R.W. 1881 on Chorillos battlefield Peru’. To the reverse is a museum label which reads ‘31H’, which would be a reference within the collection. Painted with a vibrant red colour, and blue, and detailing still visible to the face including a fine moustache and nose.
