19th Century Witches Ball

A captivating and vibrant 19th Century hand blown Witches Ball.

These globes of glass were often suspended in chimneys, windows or doorways, to ward off evil spirits, especially the evil eye, and the malevolent influence of the witch. There are several beliefs around the purpose of these witch balls. According to old folk tales, the bright colours would attract and entice the evil spirits, then the strands leading into the ball would capture the spirit and prevent it from escaping. An alternative belief was that the reflective values of these would prevent a witch from entering the room, because the witch did not have a reflection, or could not bear seeing this reflection.

Painted to the inside with powdered paint, the patterns, and colours of this piece are striking - tones of green, red, blue, and many more.
