Roman Tear Vessel

Unguentarium, also known as tear vessels, were common objects of Ancient Rome. These were often found in Romand and Greek tombs, due to the belief that they contained the tears of the families of the deceased.

They were also used to store various oils, or valuable powders and liquids. Roman glasses were traded far beyond the Empire, and have been found in distant countries such as India, Scandinavia and tombs in China.

Blown from translucent pale blue glass, it features a long neck with beautiful characterful colouring. The neck has had some repair and restoration but this doesn’t distract from its striking appearance.
