Original Post-mortem Pencil Drawing, 1858
The term “post-mortem” originates from Latin (after death), and was first registered in 1734. Throughout the centuries records would be made of the dead using different means, inclusive of death masks, portraits, locks of hair, which also served as mementos for loved ones.
This original French framed post-mortem drawing is of Louis Thierry Kergus (1790-1858) on his death bed. On the reverse is an extensive hand-written description of his life, which also references his six children. The picture was produced by the notary of Plouaret just hours after his death.
Complete with original wooden frame, featuring picture ring to hang, and attached with aged leather loop. A unique and totally original piece.
