Complete Ice Age Cave Bear Paw

Fully complete andd intact fossilised remains of an Ice Age Cave Bear Paw (Ursus Spelaeus).

The species was found to have lived across caves in Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene period. Both the Cave Bear, and the Brown Bear, are thought to be descended from the Plio-Pleistocene Etruscan Bear. It was a large and significant beast, which could be over 10 feet tall when stood on its rear legs. Expected to have weighed between 400-1,000kg. Despite its large and distinctive teeth, it is believed to have been largely vegetarian.

Recent analysis predicts that the Cave Bear became extinct 25,000 years ago, although they date much further back. It is possible that the last Ice Age which caused temperatures to plummet, was the cause of their extinction. Potentially through depleted food supplies, or through biological issues.

Mounted on a black display stand. Height 37cm x Width 20 cm, Paw Height 32cm.
