Rare 20th Century Egyptian Souvenir Box, complete with Sacred Beetle

The Scarab beetle was a symbol of regeneration and rebirth in Ancient Egypt, and was believed to be the incarnation of the Sun God Khepri.

It was thought that each night the Sun would die, and be reborn each morning as a beetle. Because of this power and significance in life, it was one of the most well known symbols in Ancient Egypt, and was used to a great extent for amulets, jewellery, and as decoration during burials.

This box is dates May 1924, with handwritten text to the bottom. It contains a sacred Scarab beetle, and several small pieces of original Mummy wrappings. It has clearly been part of a larger collection, given the label that once featured on the top of the lid. The number ‘295’ remains.

Size: case measures approximately 5.5cm in diameter
