19th Century Death Mask
The history of death masks stretches back over several centuries, deep into antiquity. They were created for Elite members of society, and were believed to provide protection to the deceased in the afterlife, or even ward off evil spirits.
Death became such an obsession throughout Europe during the late Middle ages, as a result of major events such as the Plague. The facial features were captured through the application of plaster or wax over the face, creating a true impression of the deceased that could be used as a reference for the painting of portraits, or to be displayed at the funeral for the family.
